Insurance Fraud on the Tomato Farm
The Federal Government has gone to great lengths over the years to protect and assist America’s farmers. One of the programs available to farmers is subsidized crop insurance – if your crops are destroyed by weather, the government reimburses you through a subsidized insurance program.
It’s a program that’s designed for fraud. Last year the Department of Agriculture estimates that it paid out $160 in fraudulent claims. The flat out stars in this criminal enterprise, however, are the Warren family of North Carolina who collected nine million dollars in phony claims from 1997 to 2003. They were large scale tomato farmers, at one point operating 26 farms in three states. The FBI broke up the scam and found records of false shipments, false planting records, false farm histories and other records.
