Hurricanes may no longer fall under the scope of insurance protection but in its stead, global warming is one of the newest additions to the list of add-on coverages available to insurance buyers who want to beef up their security against the unforeseen.

This is only one of many new kinds of insurance that are in the works these days, according to the Ceres report. In addition to protecting businesses from disasters associated with global warming, some companies are working out a plan to help those whose business is renewable energy to insure themselves against the failure of their new inventions.

AIG is one of the biggest insurance companies in the world and they are among the first to adopt some of these new plans into their repertoire of coverage products.

Chris Winans is an agent at AIG, and he says that his company is just providing the products that clients are asking for: “We’re looking for ways to help our clients respond to the pressures they’re under to deal with the problem.”

That may be true but the insurance industry is sorely in need of some new money making ventures as well. The disastrous weather of the last year and a half has put many insurance companies in the red. Maybe this new focus on green business will put a little green back in insurance company coffers.
