New Device Can Lower Auto Insurance Costs
A popular Indian car manufacturer is implementing a gadget that will lower the number of thefts of cars that make use of it called an immobilizer. Essentially, the immobilizer is an electronic appliance installed in the car that prevents the engine from starting unless the correct key is present. Without the right key, a car fitted with the immobilizer can only be moved if it’s towed.
How could this little piece of equipment affect car insurance prices? Car owners who install anti-theft devices in their cars that act as a real deterrent to theft may qualify for insurance rate discounts.
Jagdish Khattar of Maruti, a popular car company in India, says, “The immobilisers almost nullify the threat of theft and unlike other anti-theft device systems, this works directly in conjunction with the engine. Unless the right key is inserted, the engine will not be activated and the car won’t move.”
The anti-theft device has performed exceptionally well in Europe and Australia and now India’s Maruti will be installing them standard in their new cars under the brand name iCATS or intelligent Computerised Anti-Theft System. Insurance companies are taking notice and lowering rates accordingly.
