New Health Insurance Program for Louisiana’s Children
Author: Valeria WeberLouisiana state health care officials are now offering a new health insurance plan for families that have exceeded the income requirements in the past and were unable to qualify for free health insurance for their children.
The new health program was introduced officially on June 1, however, applications for the program known as LaCHIP have been coming in for months.
In the northwest part of the state, the health department of Louisiana took the time to make residents in that area aware of the health programs that are available to families.
The new plan is considered very affordable for those who are above federal poverty levels and would not be eligible for the previous free insurance plan. The program hopes to serve families that make between 200 percent and 250 percent above the federal poverty level. The plan requires families to pay a premium of $50 per month and additional co-payments for visits to a doctor and prescriptions.
The plan is limited to regular health insurance and does not cover dental or vision coverage.
Many residents in rural areas were unaware of the new health insurance program. A single application can be filled out for both available health programs. The final numbers for enrollment is still uncertain since applications are still coming in.
