Hurricane Preparedness…

Don’t mess with Hurricanes. These violent storms whip up winds anywhere from 74 to 200 mph. They also churn up huge waves and torrential rains that can cause flooding and devastation, not just along coasts, but hundreds of miles inland as well. We see this recently with Hurricane Fay.

We’re in the midst of hurricane season which usually runs from June through November.   So, what should you do if a hurricane is headed your way?

Always keep a disaster supplies kit containing:

  • A supply of water (at least 1 gallon per person/per day)
  • Nonperishable food and a can opener
  • A first aid kit and manual
  • A supply of any important prescription medications
  • A portable radio and a flashlight, both with extra batteries
  • Written instructions on how to turn off your home’s utilities, along with the tools needed to do so
  • Extra blankets and sleeping bags
  • Protective clothing and sturdy shoes
  • An extra set of car keys, cash and credit cards
  • Pet food and supplies

If a hurricane warning is issued, be prepared to take the following actions:

  • Listen to local radio or television for the latest information and instructions for your area. If you are advised to leave, do so immediately.
  • Bring your pets indoors. If you are evacuating to a shelter, make other arrangements for your pets, because most shelters won’t allow them. Animals that assist people with disabilities are permitted.
  • Protect your windows with boards or shutters.
  • Secure or bring indoors garbage cans, toys, patio furniture and garden tools.
  • Keep your car fueled in case you have to evacuate.
  • Check mobile home tie-downs.
  • Moor your boat securely or put it on the ground (removing the motor and half filling the boat with water).
  • Shut off the gas, water and electricity before you leave home.

Protect valuables and personal papers, including any important documents such as a life insurance policy, in a waterproof, fire-resistant portable container, moving them to higher ground (but only if you’re certain time permits).
