Preparing for your life insurance exam could save you money
Author: Byron UdellIf you’re planning on buying an individually underwritten term life insurance policy, then you will have to take a medical exam which consists of blood work and a urine sample. The information gathered from the exam will be used by the underwriter to determine your risk class. What does this mean? It means your exam can positively or negatively affect your life insurance rate.
So, what can you do to make sure you get the best results? First, always schedule your exam for first thing in the morning. In addition, you can follow these simple rules:
- Stick to a healthy diet the week prior to the exam. Minimize the use of salt and avoid sugary and excess fatty foods.
- Do not drink any alcohol or caffeine products for 72 hours prior to the exam. Alcohol is processed by the liver and can cause liver enzymes to become elevated and caffeine can elevate blood pressure.
- Avoid nasal decongestants and pain medication such as aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen the day before the exam (unless directed otherwise by your doctor). In addition, do not participate in any strenuous exercise because it can cause elevated protein in the urine.
- Fast 8-10 hours prior to the exam-taking place. This means you should not eat or drink anything except for water until the exam is completed.
- Finally, don’t eat breakfast or use tobacco the morning of the exam.
